10. South Africa
Bag The Big Five
South Africa is a land of stunning contrasts and rich diversity boasting a mixture of spectacular African landscapes from dramatic coastlines and vast savannahs, to lush vineyards and rugged mountain ranges, epitomised by iconic Table and Drakensberg Mountains. South Africa is also a cultural melting pot, with a history that is as diverse as its peoples. In South Africa, you can explore and celebrate the tapestry of this multicultural and multifaceted nation without breaking the bank, if you plan your travel itinerary carefully.
Tourism in South Africa offers something for everyone regardless of your budget. There is Cape Town, with its iconic Table Mountain, which offers visitors urban sophistication alongside raw, natural Africa. The Cape Winelands are a haven for sophisticated globetrotters who loves wine, while the Garden Route provides scenic coastal drives from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east—a distance of around 125 miles. Along the route, numerous charming and take-your-breath-away towns nestles among the most alluring and diverse landscapes imaginable. For wildlife enthusiasts, Kruger National Park offers some of the best safari experiences in the world, with the chance to see the Big Five: lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and cape buffalo. The other major Safari Parks to explore include Madikwe Game Reserve on the Botswanan border to the north, Londolozi, Timbavati, and Phindaon to name a few others. You can enjoy all these experiences, while staying within your budget.
Cultural heritage venues and relics abound aplenty across the vast landscapes of South Africa. Historical sites like Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, gives insight into the country's tumultuous past and inspiring renaissance to freedom. South Africa’s diverse wonders are waiting for you, and with vondalust.com tips, you can experience it all without overspending!
Ask any traveller who has been on Safari in Southern Africa, or specifically anyone who has been on Safari in either South Africa, Botswana or Namibia; and they will inevitably suggest you begin your Safari by flying to Johannesburg Airport (Jo'burg), South Africa. Wrong! if you're touring Kruger National Park (KNP), a flight into Jo'burg is fine, although it still approximately an eight hour drive to Kruger NP. However, if you're visiting the excellent Madikwe Private Game Reserve (South Africa), it is far cheaper and quicker timewise, to do as I did and fly into Gaborone (Botswana) via either Kigali or Jo'burg and then cross the border into Madikwe, South Africa, by transfer bus. The journey from Gaborone to Madikwe is around 58 minutes or 24.9 miles, whereas the drive from Jo'burg Airport to Madikwe Game Reserve, both in South Africa, is close to five hours! You will save a ton of money and time by being creative and you will certainly get more bang for your bucks!
